Marcus - Creator of the Artisan Food Club
These early experiences set me up well for my time working with the dairy-farming sector in Devon with Genus Breading and on to my mothers food business Patchwork pate. There I worked on sales nationally and internationally and then created my own business Carter Food House – wholesale to butchers & fish shop across the UK. I also created the Virtual Farmers Market. My one passion for many years has been to help artisan food companies grow with sales. I have also created the My Own Sauce range and My Own Range.
My passion to help small start up independent food companies have a voice has been my driving force for many years and the driver behind many ventures. The Artisan Food Club has become the perfect method for this to happen. One of my mantras is to help start-ups get "un-local" and as your shop trys these companies with very low risk introduction orders you are giveing them a real chance of being a success.
Robert Arpino - The back office
My working life started in 1974 with the family owned ice cream manufacturer where I spent 18 years gaining experience in every area of food production and business management. In 1995 I bought a small frozen foods wholesaler in Oxfordshire which went on to feature in the Fast Track 100 list of companies in 2004 & 2005. Here I specialised in servicing food service outlets by offering bespoke menu development in our own fully equipped kitchens.
Between 2010 – 2012 I helped establish a potato crisp manufacturer in Lima, Peru. Our remit was to commercialise the use of some of the 4000 indigenous potato varieties to create a quality exportable product. I spent some time in Lima at the production plant establishing our production values as well as running the local office for 2 years.
I am passionate about food and the use of interesting, authentic and high quality ingredients to create those same childhood experiences to bring people together. My businesses have always been customer facing and I demand the highest standards of customer service. To this end I have always employed sophisticated technical systems to deliver great customer service.
Aylie - Part Time Voice of Reason for AFC
My name is Aylie (pronounced 'eh lee'!) and I have joined the Artisan Food Club team. I will be helping Marcus and Robert with getting new suppliers on board and developing the processes around how we welcome suppliers to the AFC family. My background has been in food retail operations and purchasing, most recently with Whole Foods Market, where I coordinated a collection of buyers for various food and non-food categories. On having my second child I was fortunate to be able to take some time to spend with him and consider a change in career direction.
And so here I am! I am currently officially working for AFC one day a week on either Tuesday or Wednesday but will endeavor to be super-efficient in that time. I am also studying social media management with a view to being able to run that side by side with my work with Marcus. My professional experience has meant I have had a huge amount of contact with a wide variety of food producers - from those just starting out to well established global brands. I have always most enjoyed the time spent with emerging businesses and the energy that this requires. So being with the AFC is absolutely amazing for giving me that specific exposure again. On a personal level my time is primarily dedicated to two young children at the moment, with little space for much else. Luckily, I mostly love it...! I live with my family in Bristol and my interests are wide and varied but, as you can guess, food is a big theme in my life and I love to cook, feed people, and generally talk about food. I am also a frustrated creative who loves to make things. In another life, I could have been a painter or a textile artist.
My big personal goal, apart from working with AFC, is to reduce my family's plastic footprint. We have a growing community of Bristolians who are doing their bit and lobbying for small changes. This is a particularly relevant topic to the food retail and producer community and I would love to hear more about how your business feels about this area. I'm sure there are lots of best practices to be shared which could benefit all members of the Artisan Food Club family. They have a practical approach and provide producers with a more cost effective way of implementing systems. Rather than using the typical consultancy services which can be expensive, they have a range of documentation packs which producers can take, amend and implement, following the instructions provided.
Where additional on site assistance or training is required, they can provide this as well. Documentation packs include SALSA quality management system and also a range of product specific HACCP's.
